The Department of Fine Art and Design takes pride in being the oldest and only Department offering degree courses in both fine art and design. We offer courses at Diploma, Bachelor, Master and PhD levels. The Department offers a unique environment, spanning the Fine Art and Design disciplines with emphasis on creative problem-solving and inventiveness. Lecturers are Fine Art & Design practitioners and educators with national and international exhibition profiles. Members of staff in the Department undertake research in contemporary art and design which underpins and informs teaching. The Department also engages in extensive national and international programmes with visiting artists and speakers and overseas study programmes.
DIPLOMA IN FINE ART
This course is practical based and prepares students for a career in the Fine Art and Design industry. It also serves as an entry requirement for those who would like to pursue a degree in Fine Art and Design.
The common University regulations and entry requirements for Diploma courses shall apply. In addition, candidates must be holders of at least KSCE grades C(Plain) with either a grade C-(Minus) in Art and Design OR A certificate in Art and Design from a recognized institution OR those without a grade in Art and Design to present a portfolio of artworks to a university selection panel for interview and selection.
BACHELOR OF ARTS (ART AND DESIGN) AND BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (ART AND DESIGN)
The Bachelor of Arts (Art and Design) degree is a practical based course that is structured to develop knowledge that leads to a variety of careers in the Fine Art and Design Industry.
The Bachelor of Education (Art and Design) is a course structured to developknowledgeand creative skills geared into a career in teaching of fine art and design. The course also gives one intellectual and creative skills that can lead to a career in the Fine Art and Design Industry.
The common regulations for all Bachelor Degrees in the School shall apply.
In Addition consideration will be given to those with:
$1· KCSE mean grade C+ (plus) or its equivalent with a minimum of C in Art and Design.
$1· KCSE mean grade C+(plus) or its equivalent without art. These should present a portfolio of artworks to the Department of Fine Art and Design for assessment.
$1· KCSE mean grade of C (plain) or its equivalent and with a Diploma in Art and Design from a recognized institution.
$1· KCSE mean grade of C(plain) or its equivalent with a P1 certificate and proven experience in Art and Design.
MASTER OF ARTS (FINE ART)
Master of Arts (Fine Art) is a course that extends for a period of at least eighteen months and is offered in two separated modes (a) Studio option and (b) Theory option.
Studio option is done through coursework, examination and a creative project while the theory option is done through coursework, examination and a thesis.

The common regulations for all Master Degrees in the School shall apply.
The following shall be eligible for registration of the M.A (Fine Art).
$1· A holder of Bachelor of Education/ Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art of Kenyatta University or its equivalent.
DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (ART AND DESIGN)
Doctor of Philosophy is offered through research in any field of Fine Art and Design culminating in a thesis.
The common regulations for all Doctoral Degrees in the University shall apply.
The common regulations for all Doctoral Degrees in the School shall apply.
Candidates must be holders of Master of Arts (Fine Art) from Kenyatta University or Master of Fine Art & Design degree from any recognized University.
