MASTER OF ARTS (FILM STUDIES)
Entry Requirements
i. The common regulations for all Master’s Degrees in the University shall apply.
ii. The common regulations for all Master’s Degrees in the School of Creative Arts Film and Media Studies of Kenyatta University shall apply.
iii. The following shall be eligible for registration for the M.A. in the Department:
a. A holder of Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts and / or Film Technology, Bachelor of Arts in Journalism / Mass communication or their equivalent with at least an upper second class honours of Kenyatta University or any other recognized University. Holders of Lower Second class degrees may also be admitted on condition that they have at least three years’ work experience.
b. A holder of Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Education (Arts) degree with specialization in Literature or Kiswahili or English with at least Upper second class honours of Kenyatta University or any other recognized University who also hold a certificate or Diploma in Theatre Arts and / or Film Studies or have proven interest in theatre or film. Holders of Lower Second class degrees who also hold a certificate or diploma in Theatre Arts and / or Film Technology with atleast a pass or have proven interest in Theatre and Film may also be admitted on condition that they have at least three years’ work experience.
Examination Regulations
i. To graduate, a student shall be required to satisfy all University as well as School of Creative Arts, Film and Media Studies examination requirements.
ii. Examinations shall consist both theoretical and practical works.
iii. For theoretical units, grading shall constitute 30% for course work (CATS) and 70% for written examination.
iv. For units which combine theory and practical, grading shall constitute 60% Practical Continuous Assessment and 40% for sit-in written Examination.
v. Units that are exclusively practical or special projects shall be graded out of a total of 100% and will be equivalent to two (2) units. Such unit shall be assessed on at least a biweekly basis.
vi. Students will be required to do a research project (In Theatre Arts or Film) or a Thesis in their last year.
vii. A student who fails to score 40% and above in more than two (2) of the units he/she has registered for in a semester will automatically be discontinued.
viii. A student who fails to attend at least two thirds (2 of 3) of the class for any particular unit shall not be allowed to sit for the end of semester examinations of that unit.
ix. A student who fails to score 50% and above in one unit in a semester shall sit for supplementary examination.
x. A candidate who sits for a supplementary of a unit and fails it shall be allowed to re-sit for another supplementary.
xi. If a candidate, for a good reason such as illness or bereavement, is unable to sit for one or more examinations, or is unable to undertake essential parts of the work for continuous assessment, then he/she may, on the recommendation of the course coordinator, and with the approval of senate, be permitted to take supplementary examinations or a special examination.
Certification
The University classification criteria will apply. Graduates for this program will be awarded the following degree: Master of Arts (Theatre Arts)
Programme Structure and Duration
i. The Master of Arts in the Department shall extend over a period of at least eighteen months and will be equivalent to eighteen (18) units.
ii. In the first year, students doing M.A. by coursework and examination or by coursework, examination and thesis, will take nine (9) units of which five will be core.
iii. In the first year, students doing M.A. by coursework, examination and research project, will do nine (9) units of which all nine (9) will be core.
iv. In the second year, students doing M.A. by coursework and examination will in the first semester take four (4) units, two of which will be core, and two elective. In second semester they will carry out a project which will be which will be equivalent to five (5) units.
v. In the second year, students doing M.A. by coursework, examination and thesis, will spend the whole year on research work and submit a thesis which will be equivalent to nine (9) units.
